Freshwater shortage, a prominent worldwide issue, threatens economic growth, water security, and ecological health. 2/3 of the earth's crust contains water, but it is frozen or in saline oceans and seas, making it unusable for drinking and other purposes. Research shows that 97% of the world's water is salty and unsuitable by people or animals (excluding marine life), whereas 3% is freshwater.
